I think the mood of the country is drifting from “how can we fix it” to “how bad is it going to get?” It seems the choices we’re being given are between Ford and Hoover, Gas Lines and Bread Lines, 1974 vs 1934. Well, I’ve been pondering some warning signs, and here’s the things I thought of that should make you the tiniest bit happier that we haven’t reached this point. . . yet:
Be scared if: anyone seriously talks about legislating wage and price controls.
Be very scared if: the government itself becomes the employer of last resort.
Be scared if: people start large-scale bartering goods and services on Craig’s List.
Be very scared if: the legislature starts talking about “cracking down” on the “black market” on Craig’s List.
Be scared if: crooks involved in liquor and convenience store robberies ignore cash, and start swiping cigarettes and booze.
Be very scared if: retailers start accepting booze and cigarettes as payment in lieu of cash.
Be scared if: you can’t buy gold.
Be very scared if: you can’t buy ammunition.
