Well in a little less than two weeks I’ll be attending DragonCon, my last convention for a while as I retool myself to paying a little more attention to the writing part of this whole writing thing. My agent has two full novels to shop around, and I’m busy finishing my Namowrimo project from last November, a YA horror novel w/o vampires.

However, if you’re missing seeing seeing me in print lately, hang on. I will be trying an experiment on this here blog starting September 5th.

Colleen Lindsay:

Thank you for making it clear, through your response to my query, that you are unquipped (sic) to represent fiction writers who are working at the very highest level today.

Best of luck with your list of minor writers, third-rate writers, irrelevant writers, non-writers.

You lose, silly woman.

Patrick Roscoe

I pointed, I laughed, I moved on with my life. Imagine my surprise when today, in my spam filter, I find a comment from someone coming to <del datetime="2011-03-31T16:50:26+00:00">defend Mr. Roscoe’s honor from such ill deserved mocking</del> engage in an attempt at their own mockery at the expense of myself. Turns out, someone put my Roscoe post up on Reddit and it started a tiny little flame war with Mr. Roscoe’s champion. I’m sort of flattered.

I almost approved it, since I rarely get spam on new posts. Then I look a little closer and note the slightly broken English. Then I note that while the comment might reflect the post I made on Book Chick City, it didn’t actually mention the post, or writing, or anything else concrete. It could be about anything. Then I look at the URL the poster used: a link trolling site.

Akismet Y U No catch this spam?

The quiet is due to me working on Marked, the new project that (at the moment) supersedes the NaNoWriMo novel. I’m working on that one because, even though the NaNoWriMo project has more words, Marked is in a state closer to completion. This is primarily due to having written a proposal for it for Eleanor to shop around, so I have a detailed outline of the yet unwritten bits. The benefit there is the fact that all the little plot decisions, including those about pacing and scene order, are made for me so when I get to 80K words, the draft will be a lot closer to its final form. The 50K from NaNoWriMo needs serious plot/pacing/scene revision before it counts as being anywhere close to done.

Anyway, still alive, activity on the Blog and Facebook to the contrary.

If I don’t blog before then, Merry Christmas.

But I decided to stop doing it here. Frankly, most of the people coming to this site are a lot more interested in my thoughts about writing and fiction than my political ravings. And while I may have a few fans for my rants, it seems that it might make more sense to direct them to another blog now dedicated to such blather. It really is a win-win. The fans of my fiction can delude themselves into thinking I inhabit the same political universe they do, and I get to play in a sandbox where I can take my gloves off and let loose without harshing the mellow here.

So, if my politics scare you, you can just ignore them.

ON WRITING VILLAINS : One of the trickier aspects of writing fiction is coming up with believable villains. It’s tricky enough that some writers eschew the idea of a villain entirely, and simply have an antagonist who opposes the “good guys” for perfectly good and reasonable reasons. Nothing wrong with that approach, and some of the best drama can be drawn from the conflict of two mutually exclusive “goods.”

But sometimes you need evil.

I’m currently working on Messiah, which is not only the last volume of the Apotheosis Trilogy, it is also quite possibly going to be the capstone on my entire Moreau/Hostile Takeover universe. I won’t say it will be the last book in that universe (never say never) but it is likely to be the last book I write in the internal chronology. I have this habit of completely destroying the established social order in every iteration of this universe, and there’s only so many times you can do that.

This is also a milestone in that (at the moment) it is the last book I’m contracted to write. For the first time I don’t have any additional contractual commitments which both liberating and incredibly frightening. (Especially frightening to my wife, who really wants me to be able to ditch the day job so we can move out into the middle of Amish country before the economy collapses.)

Since I’m going to be working on book proposals when I’m not at the day job or working on Messiah, (or digging out from the snowpocalypse) I’m going to cut the blogging down to thrice a week for the time being.

Oh, and if you want to help out, buy a copy of Wolfbreed or Prophets. If you can’t afford to buy a book, tell all your friends to buy them, that doesn’t cost anything (and then you can borrow a copy, everyone wins.)

Prophets has been reviewed in SF Signal, and well I can’t complain about that

Also, another blogger has decided to have a contest with my book as a prize. Cool.

Also, I’ve put up a home here for Wolfbreed, although that book is probably also going to get its own web presence. (it’s just special that way) You’ll see the new cover down in my neato-keen navigation panel to the lower left. I might note that this is the only book on the site where I’ve based the descriptive text on the actual blurb on the back of the book. (Actually the longer version from when it was slated to be hardcover.)
